Carovigno and surroundings
The Historic Center
Carovigno is a town with a very ancient history. The winding alleys of its historic center extend to the 13th-century walls that once protected the ancient acropolis.
Its origins date back to the Messapian period, when the ancient city of Carbina stood here. It was later destroyed by the Tarantines in 473 BC.
To the north and west of the town you can still see remains of megalithic walls, built with roughly squared stone blocks.
The current layout of the historic center dates back to the medieval period, when the village was fortified and accessible through two gates.
The defensive walls had an elliptical shape and four towers along the perimeter, still visible today:
- Torre del Civile
- Torre Giranda
- Torre delli Brandi
- Torre del Prete
Two of them are circular, while the other two have a square plan.
Across the countryside and along the coast there are 14 defensive towers, hidden among olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation.
