The Historic Center of Carovigno

Between sea, olive trees and fortified villages

The authentic heart of Puglia

Carovigno lies in the province of Brindisi, just a few kilometres from Ostuni (7 km). It is an ideal destination for its beautiful masserie and farmhouses, its rural traditions and its excellent cuisine, which ranges from hearty dishes from the land to fresh seafood specialities. Carovigno is also a renowned centre for extra virgin olive oil production and is one of the municipalities belonging to the Collina di Brindisi PDO area.
The old town, a maze of alleyways known as “La Terra”, stands on the top of a fortified hill. It has the appearance of a late medieval town, with gateways, defensive towers and churches. On the very highest point rises the Dentice di Frasso Castle, instantly recognisable by its three different towers (one square, one round and one almond-shaped). The castle has Norman origins and in the twentieth century took the name of the noble family who lived there and remodelled it into the eclectic neo-medieval style we see today. This imposing landmark holds the memory of Carovigno and welcomes visitors every day, offering wide-ranging views that stretch all the way to the coast.

Strolling through alleyways, squares and centuries-old churches

A web of streets with authentic charm

In Carovigno, the historic centre is a tangle of little streets and squares, suspended between past and present, telling the story of a town whose authentic soul has never stopped beating. Because we know that the truest travel experiences are those that bring you as close as possible to authenticity, our advice is to wander through this village without rushing.

The entire historic centre of Carovigno is made up of narrow lanes opening onto small squares and wider piazzas, filled with flowers, plants and monuments with an ancient allure.

Here you can admire countless religious buildings, among which the fourteenth-century Mother Church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption truly stands out.

The medieval church stands along what was once the town’s main thoroughfare; little remains of its original layout, but it is fascinating to see how it was built in a strategic position between Porta Brindisi and Porta Nuova, both of which still exist today, now incorporated into later buildings.
