OUR NAME
“’Nzegna”
The story of the Virgin of Carovigno, Maria Santissima di Belvedere, is a legend filled with emotion and faith. It is connected to the sad life of a nobleman from Conversano who, gravely ill, prayed to the Madonna for a miracle.
One night she appeared to him in a dream, inviting him to travel to nearby Carovigno and search for her image. Farmers and shepherds joined what became a true hunt for the sacred icon. During the search, the cries of a young herdsman caught the nobleman’s attention.
The shepherd had found his missing heifer, kneeling before an icon inside a cave in the Belvedere district. Instantly, the nobleman from Conversano abandoned his crutches. Miraculously healed in body and spirit, he approached the herdsman and, as a sign of gratitude, purchased the lost cow.
Ancient popular devotion
The Nzegna of Carovigno
A very ancient tradition connects the celebration of the Madonna di Belvedere in Carovigno with the ritual known as the “Battitura della Nzegna”, which commemorates the discovery of the sacred image, now preserved inside the Basilian crypt on the hill of Belvedere.
Since then, Carovigno has become the land of the “battitori” (flag bearers), especially from the 1970s onward, when the first flag-throwing groups were formed and children as young as ten began learning how to wield the Nzegna.
This ritual holds deep anthropological meaning, full of faith and devotion. The battitore is the “herald of human passions”, a messenger who wraps his body around the banner, filling it with his own prayers and those of the community. When he throws the Nzegna as high as possible into the sky, those prayers are symbolically sent to heaven.
The Madonna answers this unique form of prayer: if the banner returns safely to the hands of the battitore, it is considered a sign of good fortune.
